AIIE conducts a week long Core Infrastructure Industry-Engaged Learning Programme

Adani Institute of Infrastructure Engineering (AIIE) conducted a week long Core Infrastructure Industry-Engaged Learning Programme for Engineering Students from 19th to 24th December, 2016.

The 2nd edition of Core Infrastructure Week (CIW), the annual week long infrastructure industry engaged learning programme, organized by Adani Institute of Infrastructure Engineering (AIIE) conducted  from 19th to 24th December, 2016.

This unique industry engaged learning programme is aimed at providing engineering students of AIIE the opportunity of learning from the experience, expertise and mentorship of industry professionals. Now in its second year, the Core Infrastructure Week saw infrastructure experts from not only Adani Group verticals such as Energy, Resources, Logistics, and Agriculture, but also experts from other allied sectors who shared their valuable real world industry expertise, the challenges and constraints that they face and how they find innovative solutions and adapt to change.

Prof. (Dr.) A. V. Thomas, Director, Adani Institute of Infrastructure Engineering (AIIE) said that “While several industry surveys have painted a sombre picture that most engineering graduate’s fall short of the expectations of the industry, at AIIE, our endeavor is to ensure that not only do our students possess domain expertise but they also develop career-ready competencies. An industry engaged learning platform such as CIW is an affirmation of our efforts in this direction. It will give an impetus to industry-academia collaborative teaching and mentorship”.

Prof. V.M.Patel, Principal, Adani Institute of Infrastructure Engineering (AIIE) said that “The infrastructure sector is growing and is poised to grow tremendously in line with the economy. It has a huge demand for skilled workforce possessing multifaceted skill-sets; who are innovative, creative and possess leadership and enterprising skills. CIW is a unique opportunity for engineering students to gain valuable insights into the real world of infrastructure engineering”.

The inaugural keynote was given by senior engineer and former Secretary (Road & Buildings) Government of Gujarat, Mr. Subhash Patel. Mr. Patel provided a comprehensive perspective on cost estimates of infrastructure projects. He reiterated the concern that cost over-runs are causing delays to infrastructure projects. “Emphasis on proper and timely financial due diligence and cost appraisals will reduce the risk of delays and cost over-runs for infrastructure projects” said Mr. Subhash Patel.

Other speakers included Mr. Nitesh Shah, President of The Gujarat Institute of Civil Engineers & Architects (GICEA). Mr. Shah’s address to the students resonated an emphasis on developing multifarious skills so as to not be niched in one profile only. The next speaker was Mr. Jyoti Mahapatra, Senior Engineer, HOWE Engineering Projects Mr. Mahapatra’s illustrated lecture provided a comparative account of current practices in irrigation infrastructure and its challenges.

The inaugural session also saw the launch of the Student Chapter of The Indian Green Business Council (IGBC) at AIIE. The objective of IGBC student chapter is to seed green ideas in young minds and create awareness and impart knowledge on green buildings. Mr. Samir Sinha, Chairman IGBC was present at this launch. Mr. Sinha gave an overview of Green Building concepts. He said that “Launching the Green Building movement at platforms such as the CIW which afford student interaction with industry stakeholders, is giving a great boost to spreading awareness about green buildings among future infrastructure professionals”.

Mr. Ranjan Wazir, Sr. Vice President, ATRECO has also shared his view on “Important Features of Infrastructure Projects” with young engineering minds. Mr. Jayadeb Nanda, COO, Adani Power has nicely stated about the current scenario of Indian & international power infrastructure and future needs of power infrastructure during his talk on “Power Generation & Transmission Infrastructure”.

The CIW will saw 12 speakers from Adani Group, HOWE, Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) among others. The sessions will cover a range of topics from Urban Planning to Railway Projects, from Irrigation Infrastructure to Onshore Infrastructure, from Power Generation to Transmission Infrastructure.
